(6275) Neutron probe, Neutron soil moisture probe (or gauge), Neutron moisture meter, or Neutron scattering probe
An instrument probe containing a source (usually americium-beryllium) of fast neutrons, which can be lowered to successive depths within an access tube (often aluminium) installed in the soil profile. Fast neutrons emitted into the soil lose energy by collision with the nuclei of the hydrogen atoms of soil water and the count rate of the resulting back scatter can be related to soil water content.
